Custom Toolbelt
The student I chose to create a toolkit for is a grade 6 student who is deaf/hard of hearing. He was not diagnosed until right before kindergarten and as a result, his speech was delayed and he struggled with some social issues as well. He was fitted with hearing aids and set up with an FM system at school. Having lived in his quiet, peaceful world for so long, it took him sometime to adjust to the hearing aids/FM. Even if he had a late start he took no time to catch up. He is a sensitive, artistic, incredibly creative student who loves reading, math and technology. We have been encouraging this student to advocate for himself when he can't truly hear well enough (he prefers it this way most times!) and has needed guidance to help with organization and written output.
I wanted to provide this student with tools that would help him become more organized, something included in is IEP, as well as something that would tap into his amazing creativity and artistic ability. If there was ever an artistic element to an activity then I automatically had buy-in from him! By including apps that incorporate this element into lessons, I hope to increase engagement. The apps that help with written output not only have the ability to decrease his anxiety around writing, but will also help him express himself more easily, become less frustrated and more clearly show his learning in math.
